Though Broadway's Evita had originally planned to continue on after the departure of headliners Ricky Martin, Elena Roger and Michael Cerveris, the musical has now announced a closing date of January 26, 2013. At the time of closing the musical will have played 26 previews and 337 regular performances. A national tour of the production will launch in September 2013 at Rhode Island's Providence Performing Arts Center.
"Our extensive search for a new cast presented the significant challenges of not only replacing a high-caliber trio of stars, but also synchronizing the schedules of potential replacements with that of the production," lead producer Hal Luftig said in a statement. "Despite going down the road with a variety of artists, the planets have simply not aligned for us to engage the right talent at the right time. Therefore, we have made the decision to end this incredible journey on a high note."
Evita opened at Broadway's Marquis Theatre on April 5 and earned three Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Musical. The production also stars Max Von Essen as Magaldi, Rachel Potter as Mistress and Christina DiCicco as the Eva alternative.
